This is one of the most common questions we get from South African business owners: "Should I build a website or a mobile app?" The honest answer is usually "start with a website" — but the reasoning matters more than the conclusion, because your situation might be the exception.
Reach: a website wins by default
A website is reachable by anyone with a browser — no download, no install, no app store approval. A link shared on WhatsApp, Google search results, or a Facebook post takes a customer straight to your business. A mobile app requires someone to actively decide to download it, which is a much higher-friction ask unless they already have a strong reason to (frequent repeat use, loyalty points, or a service they use daily).
Cost: a website is almost always cheaper to start
A solid business website runs from roughly R8,500 for a simple site to R18,500-R35,000 for a fuller business site or online store. A basic single-platform mobile app starts around R25,000, and a proper cross-platform app with a backend typically runs R55,000 and up. Apps also carry ongoing costs websites don't: app store developer fees, more frequent updates to stay compatible with new OS versions, and separate iOS/Android builds if you want both platforms.
When a mobile app actually makes sense
- High-frequency use: customers who'd open your product multiple times a week (delivery tracking, loyalty apps, booking systems)
- Offline functionality: your product needs to work without an internet connection
- Device features: you need push notifications, camera access, GPS tracking, or biometric login in ways a website can't replicate well
- You already have website traction: an app makes far more sense once you have a proven, engaged customer base asking for it
The middle ground: a mobile-first responsive website
Most businesses get 90% of the benefit of "having an app" by building a genuinely excellent mobile-responsive website — fast, easy to navigate on a small screen, with a WhatsApp click-to-chat button and a simple booking or contact form. This is usually where we recommend clients start, saving the app budget for later once real demand is proven.
Our honest recommendation
Unless you have a specific, validated reason an app is required on day one (frequent repeat engagement, offline use, or device hardware access), build a strong website first, launch, and let real customer behaviour tell you whether an app is worth the investment.
