Every business owner has heard that "site speed matters for SEO," but few know why, or which fixes are actually worth paying for. Here's the plain-English version.

Why speed affects rankings

Google uses a set of measurements called Core Web Vitals to judge how quickly a page becomes usable: how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to a click or tap, and how much the layout shifts around while loading. Sites that perform poorly on these measurements tend to rank lower, all else being equal, because Google's goal is to send searchers to pages that don't frustrate them.

Why speed affects revenue directly, not just rankings

Even if rankings never entered the picture, speed would still matter. Studies across e-commerce and lead-generation sites consistently show that visitors abandon slow pages within a few seconds, and that conversion rates drop as load time increases. A South African retail site loading over shaky mobile data is especially vulnerable — every unnecessary kilobyte costs you customers before they've even seen your product.

The fixes that actually move the needle

1. Compress and correctly size images

Unoptimised photos are the single biggest cause of slow websites. A photo straight off a phone camera can be 5-10MB; on the web it should be under 200KB. Modern formats and responsive sizing (serving a smaller image to mobile devices) make a dramatic difference.

2. Load what's below the fold later

loading="lazy" on images below the visible screen means the browser doesn't fetch them until the visitor scrolls near them — faster initial load, no visible difference to the user.

3. Minimise render-blocking scripts

Third-party scripts (chat widgets, analytics, ad tags) that load before your content can hold your whole page hostage. Defer or async-load anything that isn't essential to the first paint.

4. Use a font strategy that doesn't block text

Custom fonts are worth it for brand, but font-display: swap ensures visitors see readable text immediately using a system font, then swaps to your custom font once it loads — instead of showing a blank page while fonts download.

5. Choose hosting that isn't the bottleneck

No amount of front-end optimisation fixes a server that takes two seconds to respond to every request. Reliable hosting with a reasonable server location for your audience (we cover this in more detail in our cloud hosting basics guide) matters more than most business owners realise.

What we do on every site we build

Image optimisation, lazy loading, deferred scripts, and font-display strategies are standard practice on every Suncloud Systems build — not an optional add-on. It's part of why we treat performance as a design requirement, not an afterthought.
